Murphy’s Law Rules

Good old Murphy’s Law has ruled for the last week and a half of my life.

I have ran into several problems with my hosting company and after being online with tech support several times and getting an oh so sorry that your site keeps blinking in and out, there’s nothing we can do about it other than MAYBE migrating you to a different server.

Oh, and tech support never even addressed the problem of my sites losing contact with the databases multiple times per site. I decided that it was time to change hosting companies. Boy I had no idea what I was getting myself into.

I have just spent the last week and a half trying to change all my sites to a new hosting company, and Murphy has ruled…what could go wrong, DID.

  • The old hosting company drug it’s feet for most of the week. It took almost the entire week to get them to back-up my c-Panel, which shouldn’t have taken more than 24 hours.
  • It took over 48 hours for the name servers to change, actually it was closer to 72 hours, and when everything changed over to the new host my database for the largest site didn’t get transferred somehow.
  • It took HostGator several hours to get the database hooked back up, so this site was down for at least 12 hours.

I have learned that the new hosting company has amazing tech support, major kudos to the guys who spent 2 hours and sometimes longer getting all the problems worked out.

Advice/lesson to take away:

Be very careful who you pick to host your site, because you don’t wanna move it.

I would love to hear any stories or lessons that you have learned, or times when Murphy has ruled your business.
